I hope you all agree that this book is a great start to the New Year of FHBC!! If not, feel free to tell us all about it next Tuesday evening!!
Here are the questions! Don't be surprised if Durren sends out another letter with quotes, etc. I would've, but didn't have enough time!
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. I’m going to expand my standard kickoff question - Did you like the book? - and ask: Why or why not? Which of the characters did you like / dislike the most? It has been classified as young adult reading - do you agree with that assessment?
2. What do you think of Death as the narrator? How does this impact the style of the novel? Could the novel have been better from another point of view? Why or why not?
3. After revealing Rudy's imminent death, Death explains: “Of course I'm being rude. I'm spoiling the ending ... I don't have much interest in building mystery. Mystery bores me. It chores me. I know what happens and so do you. It's the machinations that wheel us there that aggravate, perplex, interest, and astound me.” How does Zusak use the literary device of foreshadowing the death of Rudy and other characters to pull the reader into the story? What other literary devices (writing style, tone, narrator point of view, symbols, imagery, allegory, setting, genre) astounded, interested, aggravated, or perplexed you? Give us an example.
4. What is significant about the titles of the books Liesel steals? (The Grave Digger’s Handbook, The Whistler, The Shoulder Shrug, The Dream Carrier, and The Complete Duden Dictionary and Thesaurus)? What about Max’s books /stories within the book?
5. Any comments about the way the book ended? Do you believe (hope) that Liesel and Max ended up together? What other questions does the novel leave unanswered?
